Woodenstate is a range of furniture and products designed by architect Thomas leach. At woodenstate all products are manufactured from alien timber hardwoods that are sourced in and around the environs of Cape Town.
We specifically avoid using imported tropical hardwoods that are common in the furniture industry today, as we believe this contributes to global deforestation. There is an abundant supply of local alien timber, especially from the Eucalyptus genus (Gum trees or “Bloekkom”). Eucalyptus is not as stable as other traditional hardwoods and as such is often overlooked as a manufacturing material. However, when Eucalyptus is carefully harvested and cured, one is rewarded with an extremely durable and attractive timber in rich colours ranging from honey browns to deep rich reds.
Most importantly, using Eucalyptus is ecologically sound; there is an urgent need to reduce the numbers of invasive alien tree species in our country and to replace these with indigenous timber species. We see ourselves as part of this conservation effort.
