Big Kid is a collective based in Durban, South Africa. It was started by artist, Jess Nicholson, and comprises a small group of artists and artisans. Jess, who usually works as an illustrator and graphic designer, says that the inspiration behind her more recent work 3D work in clay and jesmonite such as the legobookends, comes from having young children in the house who need entertaining.
Making time to play and draw and muck around with them – and be a bit bored – often leads to an idea and the start of an artwork or a functional piece.Next comesthe need for the perserverance to resolve it into something beautiful. Humour, functionality and simplicity of form are always important features of her design work. All of Jess’s pieces are eco-friendly and child-friendly and made mostly from jesmonite, clay and wool.
